Tooth grinding, also known as bruxism, is when the teeth grind by pressing against each other. This happens mostly when the person is asleep but can also happen during the day – and even then, often unconsciously. Teeth grinding can cause pain, soreness, wear and tear on the teeth, headaches and jaw soreness.
Tooth clenching is a similar behavioral disorder where the teeth are pressed against each other with great force but without grinding. Grinding can lead to wear and tear on the teeth and jaw problems.
Tooth grinding and clenching can be treated by reducing muscle activity in the jaw, thereby reducing the tension that leads to bruxism. This can help reduce pain and protect the teeth from damage.
Treatment is usually done by injections of botulinum toxin into the jaw muscles by a doctor or by an injection nurse trained in the procedure. The effect of the treatment usually lasts for 6 to 9 months. Repeated injections may be needed to maintain the effect.
