Botulinum toxin
Toxin is a common treatment to reduce the visibility of wrinkles and is often used to give a fresher and more youthful appearance.
What is botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin - or Botox as it is commonly known - is a protein that is injected into the fine muscles under the skin. When these muscles tighten, the skin contracts. As the skin's elasticity and suppleness decrease, these contractions lead to wrinkles. The toxin temporarily blocks the nerve impulses to the muscles, thereby reducing the contractions, leading to smoother skin and less visible wrinkles.
The treatment is safe and relatively painless. It only takes a few minutes and you can return to your daily activities immediately afterwards.
What is treated?
Toxin is used to treat wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes, around the mouth and on the neck (crow's feet, brow lift, nefertiti lift) and for gummy smile. It is also used for sweating and teeth grinding.
How long does the effect last?
The effect comes gradually. Full effect is seen after about 1 week and lasts between 3-6 months. After that, further treatments are required to maintain the result.
