Reconstructive surgery / treatments

The treatment

Plastic surgery consists of two main areas; the purely aesthetic surgery and the reconstructive surgery.

Reconstructive surgery is usually used for functional impairments, usually after cancer operations such as breast cancer and lymphedema, but also after trauma due to tissue defects. If you have had breast cancer and have had surgery to remove a breast or parts of a breast or have problems with retracted nipples or wish to reduce the size of the areolas, reconstructive surgery may be a solution. Our surgeons have many years of experience and knowledge of rebuilding a new breast with reconstructive procedures.

Reconstructive surgery is also used to deal with the consequences of massive weight loss, for example after a gastric bypass, with lipoedema or large skin surpluses as a result. This group also includes different types of malformations.

Examples of common treatment areas with reconstructive surgery can include;

  • Skin reconstruction after cancer surgery, such as malignant melanoma or basalioma. Reconstruction with skin grafts or local lamb burrows (lamb burrows are flaps of tissue used to cover an adjacent defect).
  • Large liposuction, for example lower legs after massive weight loss.
  • “Major liposuction of arms, for example after breast cancer with glandular evacuation.
  • Skin reconstruction after defects due to trauma, for example, expander reconstruction or free lamb cages.

The Faculty opens new center for treatment of facial paralysis.

Assistant professors Per Hedén and Birgit Stark of The Faculty are leading surgeons in treating facial paralysis and other facial nerve disorders. They were pioneers in introducing microsurgical reanimation of the face in the 90’s and have operated facial nerve disorders for more than three decades.

Congenital diseases, head and neck cancer and facial trauma may all result in the loss of facial nerve function causing mimic disfigurements with major impact on the patient’s quality of life. Mimic disfigurements may also originate from inflammation of facial nerves; a disease that affects patients of all ages.

The Scandinavian Facial Nerve Center will work with national and international colleagues, organizations, and scientific institutions with a view to optimizing treatment concepts and introducing new surgical strategies and technologies. One important aspect will be to support education for plastic surgeons with specific training in facial reanimation strategies.

Facial disorder treatments at The Faculty will primarily focus on complicated cases supporting public health care as well as insurance companies on request – in Sweden and abroad.

Overall objective of the Center is to help patients with mimic disfigurements to a better life.
