What is permanent eyeliner?

What is cosmetic eye tattooing, strictly speaking? Permanent eyeliner involves using a digital machine and an ultra-fine needle to implant pigment superficially along the line of your eyelashes. The aim is to create a semi-permanent make-up effect that does not wash off. Unlike body tattoos, we work only in the very top layer of the skin using pigments specially formulated for the delicate tissue of the face, which means the colour looks softer and can fade naturally over the years.

Our methods for cosmetic tattooing around the eyes

In modern eyelid pigmentation, there are several different techniques and permanent eyeliner styles to suit your individual features and aesthetic preferences.

Eyeliner

A very subtle and natural look where the pigment is applied precisely between your own eyelashes. This leaves no visible line on the eyelid itself, but simply creates the illusion of a darker, thicker and fuller lash line.

Classic Eyeliner

A traditional eyeliner tattoo applied just above the lash line. The thickness and any ‘wing’ are tailored entirely to the shape of the eye.

Soft Shaded Eyeliner (Dusty Eyeliner)

An advanced shading technique in which the line is softened at the top edge to create a powdery, slightly smudged effect rather than a sharp, graphic edge.

Gentle approach

The skin of the eyelid is by far the thinnest and most delicate tissue on the face. A cornerstone of our practice is an uncompromising respect for this anatomy. Unlike a traditional body tattoo, the digital PMU machine works extremely superficially (in the upper layer of the dermis). This methodical and precise approach prevents the ink from spreading uncontrollably (known as pigment migration) within the thin tissue. It minimises swelling, protects the underlying structures and ensures that the colour ages in a gentle and predictable manner.

Pre-tattoo consultation for eyeliner

The process always begins with a personal consultation. We examine the shape of your eyes, any asymmetry and the elasticity of your skin to determine which eyeliner style is most anatomically flattering. You will receive factual information about how the pigment is implanted, any possible reactions and a review of the strict aftercare routine.

You will receive a personalised treatment plan tailored to your body.

The Evolution of You

Permanent eyeliner
Step by step

We follow a rigorous clinical process from diagnosis to recovery, designed to maximise effectiveness and ensure your safety.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet your PMU specialist. We discuss thickness, shape and any ‘wing’. Using a wipe-off pen, we carefully sketch the line directly onto your eyelid. The template is adjusted until it perfectly balances your eyes and must be approved by you before we proceed.

Before your treatment

Preparations for safe treatment

Preparation is crucial. You must not use eyelash serum for at least four weeks prior to your appointment, as this makes the tissue hypersensitive and prone to bleeding. Any false eyelashes (eyelash extensions) must be removed at least 48 hours beforehand. Avoid coffee, alcohol and blood-thinning medication for the last 24 hours.

The day of treatment

Safe care at the clinic

The eye area is gently cleaned and disinfected. Contact lenses must not be worn during the treatment. You may close your eyes, and we will apply a highly effective topical anaesthetic cream along the lash line. This is left to take effect for a short while to ensure that the treatment is comfortable and pain-free.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

The eyelids often become swollen (as if you’ve been crying heavily) during the first 24 to 48 hours. Strict aftercare following eyeliner tattooing is essential. You must keep the area completely dry, and you must not use mascara, eyeshadow or rub your eyes for at least a week.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

It is physiologically normal for some of the colour to fade as the scabs fall off. A follow-up appointment (included in the price) will be booked in approximately 4–8 weeks’ time. At this appointment, we will fill in any gaps and ensure an even and rich-looking final result.

Results of permanent make-up

Building up a line with colour pigment is a multi-stage physiological process. Immediately after the treatment, the line is very sharp and dark, and the skin is swollen. After a few days, the excess pigment will flake away. The line will often shrink slightly in thickness and the colour will soften considerably. The result is semi-permanent and will be broken down by the body over time. Most people find that the colour lasts very well for between three and five years before a touch-up is needed.

Our specialists

When you receive treatment at The Faculty, you are looked after by hand-picked experts with advanced qualifications in cosmetic tattooing. Working just millimetres from the eye itself requires extreme precision, an absolutely steady hand and an in-depth understanding of colour chemistry and tissue depth. Their collective medical expertise is your greatest assurance.

Who can undergo the treatment?

The procedure is suitable for healthy individuals over the age of 18 who wish to enhance the definition of their eyes. During the consultation, we will ensure that there are no unforeseen medical contraindications. If you suffer from eye conditions (such as glaucoma), chronic dry eyes, an active eye infection, autoimmune diseases, or have very superficial and sensitive blood vessels on your eyelids, the treatment must either be adapted or is not recommended. Under no circumstances do we treat pregnant or breastfeeding patients.

Risks and complications

Whenever we penetrate the skin barrier, there are always certain risks involved. The physiologically normal reactions include temporary, sometimes severe, swelling of the eyelid and temporary tenderness. If the hygiene guidelines for aftercare at home are not followed, there is a risk of bacterial eye infections. A specific, but very rare, risk associated with permanent eyeliner tattoos is that the pigment may migrate (bleed) into the tissue if it is injected too deeply or if aftercare is neglected. Our clinical methods are strictly designed to prevent this entirely.

Other treatments

Highlighting the eyes often gives an instant lift to the look, but sometimes our patients want a more comprehensive, holistic solution. If you have heavy eyelids or pronounced crow’s feet around the eyes, muscle-relaxing injections or a small eyebrow lift can sometimes be a medically sensible first step before we apply eyeliner tattooing, to optimise the eye’s opening. For those who wish to create a harmonious frame for the entire face, cosmetic eyebrow tattooing (Microblading or Powder Brows) is also a popular and suitable complement.

Why consider an eyeliner tattoo?

The motivation behind wanting to have permanent eye make-up is entirely personal. Many people choose permanent eyeliner to save time in their daily routine and avoid make-up that smudges or runs during the day. Others seek a solution due to allergies to traditional cosmetics, impaired vision that makes it difficult to apply make-up, or to create the visual illusion of a fuller lash line following hair loss. We do not judge your personal reasons. Our focus is on creating a balanced and bespoke line based on the unique shape of your eyes and the anatomy of your face, which enhances your gaze.

Frequently Asked Questions about Permanent Eyeliner

Frequently asked questions and answers about Permanent Eyeliner

Does it hurt to get an eyelid tattoo?

As the skin around the eyes is thin, many people expect it to be very painful. We always apply a strong and effective numbing cream to the eyelid before we begin, and we often reapply it during the procedure. Many people describe the sensation simply as a tingling, vibrating pressure.

How swollen will I get, and will I need to take time off work?

The vast majority of people experience swelling, which is a normal physiological reaction to the friction caused by the needle. The swelling often resembles the appearance of the eyes after crying heavily, or during an allergic reaction, and usually subsides within 24 to 48 hours. From a medical perspective, you do not need to take time off work, but many people choose to have the treatment before a weekend precisely because of the swelling.

Can I wear contact lenses and eye make-up afterwards?

No, you must remove your contact lenses during the treatment itself and you must not put them back in for at least 24–48 hours to avoid bacteria getting into your eye. As for eye make-up (mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner), it is an absolute medical requirement that you refrain from using any of these for seven to ten days until the skin has healed and the scabs have fallen off.

Why do I need to stop using my eyelash serum before the treatment?

Active eyelash serums strongly stimulate blood circulation and the blood vessels in the eyelid to encourage eyelash growth. If you use serum, the skin is extremely sensitive and prone to bleeding profusely during the tattooing process. Blood pushes the pigment out of the skin and increases the risk of the colour migrating (bleeding) into the tissue. You must stop using the serum for at least four weeks beforehand.

Can I keep my false eyelashes (eyelash extensions) on during the treatment?

No. Eyelash extensions get in the way of the needle and also pose a significant risk of infection, as bacteria and dirt can easily become trapped in the adhesive. You must remove all eyelash extensions at least 48 hours before your appointment. You can have new eyelash extensions applied again no sooner than two weeks after your tattoo, once the area has fully healed.

What different styles of permanent eyeliner are available?

We tailor the style entirely to the shape of your eyes. You can choose a subtle Lashliner (colour applied only between your own lashes), a Classic Eyeliner (with or without a wing) for a more made-up look, or a Dusty/Shaded Eyeliner where we smudge the upper edge for a soft, shaded transition that looks powdery.

How long does an eyeliner tattoo last?

Eyeliner is generally the type of cosmetic tattoo that lasts the longest, often between three and five years (sometimes longer). This is because the skin on the eyelid is very thin and does not have the same high rate of cell renewal or sebum production as, for example, the eyebrows. The pigment is slowly broken down by the body and UV light, but rarely disappears completely; instead, it fades over time.
