After specialising in plastic surgery, Per Hedén spent some time in Australia, where he trained in microsurgery - a new technology that gradually revolutionised plastic surgery. Back in Sweden, he pioneered microsurgery in the early 1980s in Stockholm. The technology provided new opportunities to perform advanced reconstructive surgery - an area in which he is still very involved, particularly in the repair of facial paralysis.

In the early 1990s, he set up Akademikliniken with his colleague Jan Jernbeck, where he was active and a driving force for about 25 years. The clinic developed into the largest private clinic in Europe with more than 5,000 surgical procedures and more than 50,000 non-surgical treatments per year.

Per was one of the first plastic surgeons in the world to use botulinum toxin and hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers.) He was involved in the introduction of the first non-animal HA in 1996 and has since acted as an expert specialist for various companies in this field. He is internationally recognised for his non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques, which he has demonstrated and lectured on around the world.

Per is active in a large number of international plastic surgery associations. He has served as an adjudicator, supervisor and faculty opponent on several medical theses, is a regular referee for scientific articles and is a member of the editorial board of two of the more reputable international journals; Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Journal and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal.

He has written a book with patient information, Plastikkirugiboken, published in Swedish in 1996 and later translated into English and Russian. The book has sold over 20,000 copies. He has published numerous book chapters in medical textbooks on breast augmentation, facial paralysis and non-surgical facial rejuvenation with injectable drugs, published more than 100 peer-reviewed medical articles, developed several new surgical techniques, held numerous international workshops and lectures, and performed surgical demonstrations of his techniques in countries all over the world. He is a frequent lecturer and moderator at international medical congresses.

In 2002, as initiator, organiser and chairman, he started the international plastic surgery conference "Beauty Through Science", which is held every year in Stockholm. From 2021, this conference will also have an annual meeting in New York, USA. The BTS conference is now the largest aesthetic medicine conference in Northern Europe, attended by nearly 1,000 participants from 60 countries in 2019.

Per has a scientific commitment and is involved in the development of new products and technologies. He holds several patents on new technologies in the field of medical technology and is a founder and co-owner of companies working in the medical technology industry.
