What do ‘lip flip’ and ‘gummy smile’ mean?

Traditional muscle-relaxing injections are administered deep into the muscle tissue to reduce expression lines. However, using a method often referred to internationally as the meso-botulinum toxin technique (or skin-botulinum toxin), we use the medication in a completely different way. A meso-botulinum toxin treatment involves injecting microscopic doses of diluted botulinum toxin very superficially, just beneath the skin’s surface, rather than into the muscle. The drug then affects the structures within the skin, specifically the micro-muscles that control the opening of the pores, as well as the sebaceous and sweat glands. The result is a smoother skin surface with less visible pores, reduced redness and a noticeably more even complexion, without affecting your facial expressions in any way.

Our botulinum toxin treatments for the skin’s surface

We use gentle, scientifically proven methods to treat overactive skin glands and pores.

Superficial microdoses (meso-botulinum toxin)

The product is diluted more than in a traditional anti-wrinkle treatment. It is then applied evenly across large areas of the face, such as the forehead, cheeks and chin, to create an overall smoothing effect on the skin’s surface.

Combination therapies

For maximum skin rejuvenation, these superficial injections are sometimes combined with skin boosters (hyaluronic acid) to both tighten the pores and deeply hydrate the skin from within.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Working in the dermis requires extreme clinical precision. Our specialists have an in-depth understanding of anatomy and know exactly which layer of skin to treat. This ensures that the muscles beneath the skin remain completely intact, which is crucial for a safe and gentle treatment.

A clinic full of expertise

Administering dozens of superficial injections across the entire face places high demands on the treating specialist’s fine motor skills, patience and understanding of anatomy. If the medication is injected too deeply, there is a risk of unintentionally affecting facial expressions. At The Faculty, you will find a clinic brimming with expertise. For us, your medical safety is always our top priority, and all treatments are carried out under strict, clinical and sterile conditions to minimise risks and guarantee a beautiful, radiant result.

Price of botulinum toxin treatment

The exact cost of the treatment will be determined during your personal consultation, depending on the size of the area of the face to be treated and how much medication your skin requires.

Pre-treatment consultation

A successful clinical outcome always begins with a thorough consultation. Our specialists will assess your skin condition, sebum production and pore size. You will receive objective medical advice regarding expectations, the procedure and aftercare.

After the consultation, you have a statutory cooling-off period of at least 48 hours (which applies to aesthetic injection treatments) to allow you to decide in your own time whether you wish to give your consent.

The Evolution of You

Meso-Botulinum Toxin Treatment
Step by step

To ensure the highest standards of medical care, we follow a strict and carefully designed clinical process for superficial injection treatments.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

The therapist will carry out a thorough assessment of your skin. We will identify the areas where the pores are most enlarged or where sebum production is at its highest (often the T-zone: forehead, nose and chin).

Preparations

Preparing for a safe operation

To minimise the risk of infection, the entire face is thoroughly disinfected with chlorhexidine. If necessary, a topical anaesthetic cream may be applied before the treatment, as numerous small injections will be administered.

The treatment

Safe care at the clinic

We use extremely fine and short microneedles. The medication is injected in tiny droplets just beneath the skin’s surface (intradermally) in a dense grid pattern across the treatment area. The method is very gentle on the tissue and minimally invasive.

After treatment

Awakening and initial rest

The area is examined clinically. It is perfectly normal for the skin to become red and for small raised bumps (wheals) to appear at the injection sites. These fluid-filled bumps are usually absorbed by the skin within 30 to 60 minutes.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

You will be given strict guidelines to follow. Do not touch your face and do not wear any make-up whatsoever for the first 12 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise, hot baths and saunas for 48 hours to prevent the medication from spreading.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

A voluntary follow-up appointment is always offered after 14 days to check how your skin is responding to the treatment.

Results following treatment

The effects of the treatment develop gradually. You will begin to see the results for your lip flip and gummy smile after around 4 to 10 days. The full anatomical result is assessed after 14 days. The clinical durability in the mouth area is often slightly shorter than in, for example, the forehead, as the orbicularis oris muscle is extremely active when we talk and eat. On average, the results last for 2 to 3 months. After that, the muscle slowly regains its normal mobility and the treatment can be repeated. The clinical duration of superficial injections is usually between 3 and 4 months. After that, the sweat and sebaceous glands gradually return to their normal function, and the treatment can be repeated to maintain the skin’s fine texture and radiance.

Our specialists in injections

At The Faculty, we prioritise medical expertise above all else. All superficial micro-treatments using botulinum toxin are carried out exclusively by qualified doctors and qualified injection nurses with extensive clinical experience.

Who can undergo the treatment?

To undergo medical injection treatments, you must be at least 18 years old, in good health and not be pregnant or breastfeeding. This treatment is ideal for those suffering from excessive sebum production, redness (such as rosacea-like symptoms) or enlarged pores. However, if you have an ongoing, active skin infection, this must heal completely before we can carry out the treatment.

Complications and risks

Superficial injections are generally very safe. As we work in the dermis, which is extremely rich in blood vessels, small, temporary bruises and temporary redness are the most common side effects. If the medication is accidentally injected too deeply, there is a small risk that it may affect the underlying facial muscles. At The Faculty, this risk is strictly minimised through our qualified staff’s in-depth understanding of anatomy, careful dilution techniques and conservative dosing.

Why consider botulinum toxin for skin texture and radiance?

Many patients struggle with enlarged pores, excessive sebum production, or a generally dull and tired complexion. Traditional skincare and superficial facial treatments can provide moisture, but often lack the ability to tighten pores from within. A medical glow treatment using microdoses of botulinum toxin offers a deep-acting solution. It is an extremely popular pore treatment for those seeking a smoother skin surface (often searched for online as ‘meso-botulinum toxin for open pores’). As the technique significantly reduces sebum production, it is also a valued method for calming oily skin and alleviating mild breakouts (searched for internationally as ‘meso-botulinumtoxin acne’). If you are looking for an advanced facial treatment that actually alters the skin’s microenvironment, this is a medically superior option.

Frequently asked questions about botulinum toxin treatments

Here we have compiled some frequently asked questions about botulinum toxin treatment for radiance and pores

What is the difference between traditional injections and this superficial method?

In traditional wrinkle treatment, the medication is injected deep into the muscle to restrict movement (e.g. in the frown line). With skin botulinum toxin treatment, the medication is placed very superficially in the skin (dermis). The aim is not to freeze the muscles, but to reduce pore size, sebum production and redness to create a smoother skin surface.

Will my face feel stiff?

No, that’s the main advantage of this method. As we only treat the surface layer of the skin and not the underlying muscles, you retain your full, natural facial expressions and mobility.

Is this method an effective pore treatment?

Yes, it is one of the most clinically effective methods (meso-botulinum toxin for open pores) for making pores appear to tighten and look significantly smaller, giving the skin a smoother and more ‘refined’ appearance.

Can this technology be used to treat acne?

Absolutely. By blocking the signals to the sebaceous glands, the treatment significantly reduces the overproduction of oil (sebum) in the skin. This makes the treatment highly effective for soothing oily skin and preventing new outbreaks of mild acne (meso-botulinumtoxin acne).

Is this the same as a classic glow treatment at a salon?

No. Salon treatments usually focus on exfoliating and moisturising the outermost layer of the skin (the epidermis) from the outside. This treatment is a medical procedure that uses medication to physically alter how your pores and glands behave from the inside, resulting in much deeper and longer-lasting results.

What kind of difference can I expect to see before and after?

Most patients notice that their skin becomes significantly less oily, that their pores appear smaller and that general facial redness is reduced. This results in a much smoother complexion with a natural radiance and glow.

How long will the effects of my skin-improving treatment last?

The clinical effect usually lasts for 3 to 4 months. As the medicine is gradually broken down by the body, the sebaceous glands and pores slowly return to their normal function and size.
