What is permanent hair removal?

What does the treatment involve in medical terms? Permanent laser hair removal is a process in which concentrated light waves are directed into the skin. The light is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair shaft, and when the light energy reaches the root, it is converted into heat (approx. 70 degrees Celsius). This selective heating coagulates and destroys the blood supply to the hair follicle itself, causing it to lose its ability to ever produce a new hair.

Our hair reduction methods

In aesthetic and medical dermatology, there are several techniques available for hair removal. Our specialists use market-leading equipment to safely target the root of the hair follicle.

Laser hair removal (Alexandrite & Nd:YAG)

Our primary method. The laser emits a highly concentrated beam of light which is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft, travels down to the root and destroys the hair follicle through heat. We adjust the wavelength to suit your skin type.

Gentle approach

A cornerstone of all heat-based treatments is our respect for the skin barrier. When we perform laser hair removal, the machines use integrated cooling systems that constantly cool the skin’s surface (epidermis) to safe temperatures, at precisely the same millisecond that the laser pulse is delivered deep into the dermis. This methodical and clinically balanced approach protects the surrounding tissue from burns, makes the treatment significantly gentler and ensures that the heat energy is absorbed only by the hair follicle.

A clinic full of expertise

Treating the skin with powerful laser equipment demands an extremely high level of dermatological expertise. At The Faculty in Stockholm, your hair removal is carried out exclusively by registered nurses and specially trained skin therapists. Our practice is based on scientific evidence and strict safety protocols. This provides you with a professional care pathway that minimises the side effects often associated with cheaper salons.

Price for permanent hair removal

The price of permanent hair removal is based entirely on the size of the area to be treated. As hair grows in cycles, a course of several treatments is always required to achieve the full result. During your consultation, you will receive a transparent and precise quote for your treatment area (e.g. back, legs, stomach or bikini line).

Consultation before injection treatment

Your journey begins with a personal consultation. We’ll assess your skin type and hair colour to ensure that your hair follicles contain enough pigment for the laser to be effective. You will receive factual information about the number of recommended treatments, how your skin reacts to the heat, and the advice you need to follow.

You will receive a specific treatment proposal based on your body. After the appointment, you will have a statutory reflection period of at least 7 days to decide in peace and quiet whether you want to give your consent.

The Evolution of You

Laser treatment
Step by step

To make sure you know exactly what to expect, we have a very clear process from the first meeting to the final check.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet our specialist, who will analyse the contrast between your skin tone and hair colour. We will carefully review your health declaration to rule out any medications (such as certain antibiotics) that make the skin extremely sensitive to light, which would constitute a medical contraindication for laser treatment.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

You must not under any circumstances wax, epilate or pluck the hair with tweezers during the four weeks prior to the treatment, as the laser needs an intact hair root to target. The area must not be sunburnt. The day before or on the morning of the treatment, you must shave the treatment area thoroughly with a razor.

The day of treatment

Safe care at the clinic

The area is cleaned of any creams or deodorants. Depending on the laser machine, we often apply an optical cooling gel to the skin, which acts as a light conductor whilst protecting the epidermis from friction. Both you and the practitioner will wear protective goggles.

After treatment

Awakening and initial rest

The specialist moves the laser handpiece systematically across the skin. Rapid pulses of light are emitted at regular intervals. You will feel a distinct sensation of heat, which is often described as a rubber band snapping against the skin. A built-in cooling system immediately alleviates this sensation.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

A common physiological reaction is for the hair follicles to swell slightly (perifollicular oedema) and for the skin to become red. This usually subsides within a couple of hours. You must strictly avoid direct sunlight on the treated area, and refrain from using the sauna and intense exercise for the first 24 hours to allow the heat in the skin to subside.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

After about one to three weeks, the treated hair will ‘shed’ and fall out. The next session in your course of treatment is scheduled four to eight weeks later, depending entirely on the area being treated and the hair’s specific growth cycle.

Results of laser treatment

The laser only destroys hair follicles that are in the active growth phase (the anagen phase). As your hairs are in different phases at the same time, the hair falls out gradually over the weeks following each session. After a full course of treatment (usually 6–10 sessions), the vast majority of people experience a reduction in hair growth of around 80 to 90 per cent. Any hairs that remain are often much lighter in colour and finer. Hormonal changes in the body may activate new, dormant hair follicles later in life.

Our specialists

When you receive treatment at The Faculty, you are looked after by qualified nurses and skin therapists with specialist expertise in medical lasers. Operating machines that generate high levels of heat requires an in-depth understanding of physiology, melanin levels and risk assessment. Their collective medical expertise is your greatest assurance against skin damage.

Who can undergo the treatment?

The treatment is suitable for healthy individuals over the age of 18. The laser targets pigment, which means the method is most effective for removing brown and black hair on lighter skin. With modern Nd:YAG lasers, we can now also treat darker skin types very safely. However, the laser does not work on completely white, grey or light red hairs. We do not treat patients with photosensitive conditions, active infections in the area, or patients who are pregnant.

Risks and complications

All light and heat treatments carry risks. Expected and harmless side effects of hair removal include temporary redness, swelling around the hair follicle and, occasionally, mild itching. Specific risks, which often arise if the skin has recently been exposed to the sun, include superficial burns and temporary pigmentation changes (dark or light patches). We strongly recommend avoiding home hair removal devices, as they often lack the necessary safety features and can lead to burns or irregular hair growth.

Other treatments

Smooth, hair-free skin often provides an excellent base, but sometimes our patients wish to further improve their skin. If you have areas on your face where the skin has become dull or lost elasticity, a chemical biorevitalisation treatment, such as PRX-T33, can even out skin tone and restore a healthy glow. For patients experiencing extreme dryness after shaving their legs, we recommend our moisturising clinic treatments or tailored medical body creams that strengthen the skin barrier from within.

Why consider laser hair removal?

The reasons for wanting to remove hair are highly personal. Many people come to us because they suffer from repeated inflammation of the hair follicles and need an effective treatment for ingrown hairs. Others want permanent facial hair removal to manage hormonal hair growth on the upper lip or neck, whilst some seek a smoother daily routine through hair removal on the bikini line or legs. We also see high demand for hair removal among men, where the focus is often on the back, chest and shoulders. Whatever your reasons, we do not judge your choice. Our task is to use a clinical skin analysis to determine the most effective and anatomically correct method for you specifically.

Frequently asked questions about laser hair removal

Frequently asked questions and answers about laser hair removal

How long does the treatment take, and how long is the recovery period?

The time spent at the clinic varies considerably; hair removal on the upper lip or neck takes just 10 minutes, whilst a full leg or back can take 45–60 minutes. No recovery time or time off work is required. You will be fully recovered and able to resume your daily routine immediately, although your skin may be slightly red for the first 24 hours.

What is the difference between a bikini line wax and intimate hair removal (genital area)?

When treating the bikini line, we only laser the hair that lies outside the standard panty line, often including a section down the thighs. Intimate hair removal (also known as a Brazilian) involves us, according to your wishes, laser-treating all or part of the pubic area, including the labia and perianal region.

Could laser treatment affect my internal anatomy, for example when searching for "hair removal hymen"?

This is a very common anatomical myth and concern. The answer is no. The laser light penetrates only a few millimetres into the skin, just deep enough to reach the hair follicle. It does not affect any internal organs, deep mucous membranes or internal structures such as the vaginal corona (sometimes called the hymen). The treatment is entirely superficial.

Can men have laser treatments?

Absolutely. Hair removal for men is extremely common here. Men usually come to us to reduce dense hair growth on their back, chest, shoulders and neck, but also to permanently remove beard hair on the neck, which often causes irritation and ingrown hairs after shaving.

Does laser treatment help with ingrown hairs?

Yes, medical laser treatment is by far the most effective treatment for ingrown hairs. As the laser destroys the hair follicle itself, the root cause of the problem is completely eliminated. After just a few sessions, inflammation, red spots and ingrown hairs usually decrease significantly.

Can you remove nose hair with a laser? (Nose hair removal)

We can treat the hairs that grow on the surface of the nose (the skin). However, we do not perform laser treatment inside the nostrils, as the mucous membranes there are very sensitive and the hairs inside the nose fulfil an important physiological function as a biological filter for our airways.

Why shouldn’t I use IPL hair removal devices at home?

Home devices have a significantly lower power output for safety reasons and rarely produce permanent results; they merely temporarily numb the hair follicle. Furthermore, they lack the advanced cooling systems found in professional machines. Without clinical knowledge of skin tones and settings, the risk of serious burns and permanent pigmentation is very high.
