What does thigh lift surgery involve?

A thigh lift is a surgical procedure designed to remove loose skin and tissue from the thighs in order to create a firmer and smoother contour. Thigh liposuction, on the other hand, is aimed at patients with good skin elasticity, where microcannulas are used to permanently remove stubborn fat deposits. During a consultation, a thorough clinical analysis is carried out to determine which of these methods, or a combination of both, is medically best suited to your specific tissue.

Our surgical techniques for thigh surgery

To achieve an anatomically sound result and tighten the thighs, our surgeons use tailored techniques depending on whether your primary requirement is to remove fat, skin, or both.

Inner thigh lift (Mini thigh lift)

For patients with a limited amount of excess skin on the upper inner thigh. The incision is made discreetly in the groin crease, after which the skin is tightened upwards.

Thigh lifts (Entire thighs)

A more extensive thigh lift for patients with a significant amount of excess skin. The incision runs from the groin and vertically down the inner thigh towards the knee.

Liposuction thighs

If you have good skin elasticity but wish to remove fat, we use fine cannulas to suction out the fat cells. This can be done on the inner or outer thighs (saddle bags) or circumferentially (all the way round the thigh).

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of which surgical method is deemed best suited to your anatomy, our specialists use refined techniques that minimise surgical trauma to the tissue. A gentle and precise approach is crucial for reducing bleeding and swelling after the procedure. This not only promotes a smoother and safer healing process, but is also key to ensuring good blood circulation and optimising your scars.

The Evolution of You

Thigh lift
Step by step

To ensure you feel confident and well prepared, we have a clear and reliable process in place, from your first visit right through to your final follow-up appointment. Here, we provide an overview of how thigh lift surgery is carried out at our clinic, from start to finish.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

We assess your skin quality, musculature and fat deposits to determine which surgical technique is medically most suitable for you.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Once you have had time to consider it, the operation will be scheduled. It is essential that you do not smoke at all for four weeks before and after the operation to ensure optimal wound healing, which is particularly important on the legs.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

You will be admitted to the ward and can get changed in your room. You will meet your surgeon and anaesthetist, and any compression garments will be fitted. The procedure normally takes 1.5 to 3 hours and is usually performed under general anaesthesia to ensure optimal patient safety.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will be monitored in the recovery room. If you have had a major thigh lift, you will often stay in the clinic overnight for pain relief.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

You must wear your compression trousers around the clock for several weeks. Avoid sitting with your legs bent for long periods at the start, so as not to put strain on the wounds in your groin.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

A follow-up appointment to check the wound and remove any stitches will take place after 1–2 weeks. A final check-up with your surgeon will be booked in six months’ time.

Results following thigh lift surgery

Recovery following thigh surgery requires patience. A common claim found online is how to ‘get slimmer thighs in 2 weeks’. Medically speaking, this is impossible with surgery. During the first few weeks, the legs are severely swollen and bruising is common. You will wear a tight-fitting compression garment to tighten the skin and reduce fluid build-up. The tissue heals and contracts over a long period of time, and the final anatomical result can only be medically assessed after six to twelve months.

Our specialists in plastic surgery

At The Faculty, we have a team of hand-picked plastic surgery specialists with extensive experience in body contouring. The legs and thighs are complex areas to operate on due to the effects of gravity and skin tension. Choosing a clinic with extensive clinical experience is the foundation of your medical safety and a long-lasting anatomical result.

Who is eligible for thigh surgery?

To undergo cosmetic surgery, you must be over 18 and in good general health. During the consultation, a thorough assessment of your anatomy and weight stability will be carried out. It is an absolute medical requirement that you are a non-smoker, as nicotine restricts blood circulation. In the legs, where circulation already has to work against gravity, smoking is a direct cause of wounds splitting open and serious infections developing.

Complications and risks

All surgical procedures carry risks, such as bleeding or asymmetrical healing. Complications that may arise with thigh lift surgery often relate specifically to wound healing. As the incisions in the groin are constantly exposed to movement when we walk or sit, there is an increased risk of the wounds healing slowly. Another aspect is thigh lift scarring (scars following a thigh lift). These can sometimes become wide or sag slightly due to the weight of the legs. Your surgeon will explain this in detail and how we work medically to minimise the risks.

Other body contouring treatments

Following significant weight loss, excess skin is rarely confined to just one part of the body. Patients who need to remove excess skin from their thighs often also have loose skin on their stomach or wrinkled skin on their arms. For this reason, thigh lift surgery is often combined with tummy tuck or arm lift surgery as part of a phased surgical plan. We assess the anatomy of your entire body during the consultation.

Why consider thigh lift surgery or liposuction?

As we age, or following significant weight loss, it is common for the skin to lose its elasticity. Many people come to us because they have loose skin on their thighs and wish to remove excess skin from this area to reduce chafing and discomfort in their daily lives. Others are bothered by localised fat deposits that do not disappear with exercise (genetic fat on the thighs) and wish to undergo liposuction. Whether your goal is firmer skin on the thighs or to remove excess volume, the motivation is entirely your own. We listen to your motivations and design an objective, medically sound plan to achieve firmer thighs based on your body’s specific circumstances.

Frequently asked questions about thigh surgery

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions about thigh surgery

How can you slim down your thighs / how can you lose fat from your thighs?

Questions such as "how can I slim my thighs", "how can I get rid of fat on my thighs" or "remove fat from my thighs" are very common. From a purely physiological point of view, it is not possible to target fat loss on the legs through exercise. If you have a genetic tendency to store fat on your thighs, surgical liposuction is the only method that can permanently remove these specific fat cells and thereby alter your body’s proportions.

Can I get rid of fat on my thighs permanently?

Yes, liposuction removes fat cells permanently, which means you can get rid of fat on your thighs for good. If you were to gain a significant amount of weight in the future, any remaining fat cells in the area would swell, but the original disproportionate deposit usually does not return in the same way.

Is it possible to have skin tightening surgery for free (through the county council)?

Many patients search for “free excess skin surgery” or the option of thigh lift surgery funded by the local health authority (thigh lift surgery via the local health authority). The National Health Service only covers the cost of surgery when the excess skin is so severe that it causes serious and documented medical problems, such as chronic fungal infections or mobility issues that cannot be treated in any other way. Purely aesthetic procedures to tighten the thighs are always carried out privately at the patient’s own expense.

Will the scars from my thigh lift be very visible after the operation?

The location and visibility of the scar depend entirely on the method used. With an inner thigh lift, the scar is relatively well concealed within the groin crease, meaning it is rarely visible when wearing underwear or swimwear. A full thigh lift requires a vertical incision running down the inside of the thigh. This scar is visible, and although it fades over time, patients generally come to accept a scar rather than live with extensive, chafing excess skin.

Is it possible to have liposuction and a skin tightening procedure at the same time?

Yes, it is very common. To achieve the best possible results from a thigh lift, the surgeon often begins the operation with liposuction. This is done to thin out the tissue, which in turn makes it much easier to lift the skin, tighten it and remove the excess skin without creating too much tension in the incisions.

What happens if you have poor circulation in your legs?

The legs are particularly vulnerable during surgery because the blood has to be pumped back up to the heart against the force of gravity. If you have known circulation problems, a tendency to develop varicose veins or a history of blood clots, this is crucial medical information that must be thoroughly investigated during your consultation before a surgical plan can be finalised.

Can I view before-and-after photos of thigh lift surgery at the clinic?

Absolutely. During your visit, the surgeon can show you a wide range of objective and verified before-and-after photos of thigh lifts (as well as photos of thigh lifts and liposuction) from previous patients. This is an important step in helping you gain a realistic picture of where the scars will be placed and how much tightening is anatomically possible for your specific body type.
