What is cosmetic tattooing?

Microblading eyebrows and permanent make-up are actually collective terms for procedures in which colour pigments are implanted into the upper layer of skin (the dermis) using microneedles or microblades. Unlike a body tattoo, which uses ink and goes very deep to last a lifetime, cosmetic tattooing uses finer pigments and a shallower technique. This is done deliberately so that the colour can be adjusted and fade as your facial features change over time.

Our permanent make-up techniques

There are now several advanced techniques available in the field of cosmetic tattooing in Stockholm. Our specialists are experts in the market’s leading methods and will help you choose the one that best suits your skin type.

Microblading and Nano Brows

Two hair-stroke techniques. Microblading uses a manual tool with tiny micro-needles to etch in pigment that mimics real hair strands. Nano brows is a more modern development where a machine with an extremely fine needle is used instead, for an even more natural hair-like effect.

Powder Brows and Ombre Brows

For those who want the effect of a soft, blended shade. Powder brows fill in the brows with a powdery tone, whilst ombre powder brows are lighter at the front and darker towards the tail for a dimensional effect.

Lip Blush

A cosmetic lip tattoo (lip blush tattoo) that adds a soft, natural tint (lip tint). It is also a popular treatment for making thin lips appear fuller, helping to define the lip line.

Permanent Eyeliner

A thin, precise cosmetic eyeliner tattoo is applied along or just above the lash line to define the eye.

Gentle approach

A fundamental principle underpinning all our pigmentation treatments is absolute respect for the skin’s various layers. Unlike traditional body tattoos, where the ink is deposited deep into the skin, we work exclusively in the upper layers of the skin (the upper part of the dermis). Whether we are creating individual hairs or applying shading, we use an extremely light touch and specially formulated pigments that the skin tolerates well. This methodical and superficial approach is crucial – it makes the procedure gentle, prevents the ink from bleeding (migrating) beneath the skin, and ensures that the pigment fades softly and naturally over time.

Consultation before injection treatment

Your journey begins with an initial consultation. During this, we’ll assess your skin tone and undertone to select the right pigment. We’ll discuss the differences between, for example, nano brows and microblading, taking into account the asymmetry of your eyebrows. You will receive factual information on how the pigment behaves in the skin, as well as precise advice on aftercare.

You will receive a personalised treatment plan tailored to your body.

The Evolution of You

Cosmetic tattooing
Step by step

We follow a rigorous clinical process from diagnosis to recovery, designed to maximise effectiveness and ensure your safety.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet with your specialist, who will analyse your specific skin condition. Using advanced measurement tools (brow mapping), we will sketch out a precise and balanced shape. We will select colour pigments based on your skin’s undertone, and you must approve the template before we proceed.

Before your treatment

Preparations for safe treatment

To minimise the risk of bleeding, which could cause the pigment to fade, you must not drink alcohol or coffee, or take blood-thinning medication (such as paracetamol) in the 24 hours leading up to the treatment. You should also avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and retinol products in the treated area after the treatment.

The day of treatment

Safe care at the clinic

We often apply a topical anaesthetic cream to make the procedure more comfortable. The specialist then uses sterile, single-use tools to carefully implant the pigment into the skin. The entire process at the clinic (including anaesthesia and design) usually takes 2 to 2.5 hours.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

Careful aftercare following microblading is essential. You should avoid getting the area wet during the first few days, and completely refrain from using the sauna, swimming in chlorinated pools, strenuous exercise and applying make-up to the area throughout the healing phase (approx. 2 weeks).

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

Between 30 and 50 per cent of the colour fades during the initial healing process. That is why a follow-up appointment (included in the price) is always necessary after approximately 4–8 weeks. It is during this appointment that we replenish any lost pigment and refine the shape to achieve the final result.

Results of PRX-T33

Tattooing pigment into the skin is a multi-step process. Immediately after the treatment, the colour is very dark and vivid. As the skin renews itself (exfoliates), the scabs fall off, and the tattoo will look very pale for a while before it ‘blooms’ into its final, softer shade. This is completely normal. The results of cosmetic tattoos are semi-permanent. The pigments are naturally broken down by the body’s immune system and UV light, causing the colour to gradually fade over the course of one to three years.

Our specialists

At The Faculty, we ensure that your treatment is carried out by certified permanent make-up specialists. Working with colour pigments on the face requires an in-depth understanding of colour scales, skin structure and medical asymmetry. This combined expertise is your guarantee of a symmetrical and anatomically safe result.

Who can undergo the treatment?

These techniques are intended for healthy individuals over the age of 18. During the consultation, we will assess whether your skin is suitable. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, Powder Brows are often recommended over Microblading, as the hair strokes may otherwise run. If you have active eczema, psoriasis on your face, active herpes (in the case of lip tattooing) or a tendency to develop keloid scars, we advise against the treatment. Under no circumstances do we treat pregnant or breastfeeding patients.

Risks and complications

As the treatment involves breaking the skin barrier, there are risks involved. Normal reactions include temporary redness, swelling and itching during the healing phase. Specific risks include allergic reactions to the pigment or a bacterial infection if hygiene at home is poor. If the treatment is performed too deeply (often the cause of failed microblading), scarring may occur and the colour may turn grey-blue. Our clinical methods are strictly designed to avoid this.

Other treatments

Permanent make-up is a fantastic way to accentuate and define your features, but sometimes a more comprehensive solution is required. If, for example, you are considering a Lip Blush, a deeply hydrating injection treatment, such as Skinbooster or a subtle filler, can be an excellent complement to help restore your lips’ lost volume from within. For patients with severely asymmetrical eyebrows, muscle-relaxing injections in the forehead can sometimes help to balance the muscles before we tattoo the final shape.

Why consider cosmetic tattooing?

Choosing to enhance or recreate certain facial features using colour pigments is a practical and personal choice. Many people come to us to correct asymmetrical eyebrows, or because they suffer from sparse eyebrows caused by over-plucking, age or genetics. Others choose cosmetic lip tattooing to give a more even tone to pale contours, or permanent eyeliner to save time in their daily routine. Whatever brings you here, our task is to create a bespoke, balanced and anatomically correct shape based on your unique bone structure and skin tone.

Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions about Microblading and Lip Blush

Frequently asked questions about microblading and lip blush

What is the difference between Powder Brows and Microblading?

This is the most common question. Microblading uses a hand-held tool to etch individual ‘hairs’ into the skin, creating a very crisp and defined look. Powder brows use a machine to scatter thousands of microscopic dots of pigment, creating a soft, shaded effect (as if you’d filled in your brows with eyebrow powder).

What does the day-by-day healing process for microblading involve? (Help, my microblading faded after a week!)

It’s very common to start panicking around day seven. The process goes something like this: Days 1–3: The brows are dark and defined. Days 4–7: The skin starts to flake and scabs fall off. Days 8–14: The skin underneath is new and opaque, which makes the pigment look faded or milky (it looks as though the colour has disappeared). Weeks 3–4: The colour ‘returns’ to the surface once the skin has regained its full transparency, though in a softer shade.

How long do microblading and eyebrow tattoos last?

Generally, the results last between 1 and 3 years. How quickly the colour fades depends on your skin type (oily skin repels colour more quickly than dry skin), how much you sweat, and your exposure to UV light. Most people choose to have a colour boost once a year to keep their brows looking sharp.

What is the difference between ombre brows and microblading?

Ombre brows is a specific technique within the Powder brows method. Here, the brow is shaded gradually, from a very light and soft front edge at the bridge of the nose to a sharper and darker tail. Microblading uses only the hair-stroke technique. Sometimes the two are combined, which is known as ‘Combo brows’.

What is Lip Blush and how does it work? (What is Lip Blush?)

Lip blush (or cosmetic lip tattooing) is a technique that involves applying a light layer of pigment across the entire surface of the lips. It is used to define the contour, even out asymmetry and create the illusion of slightly fuller lips (an optical treatment for thin lips). Healing is quick; the lips swell during the first 24 hours and the colour often flakes off in just 3–5 days.

Is it possible to have cosmetic eyeliner tattooing done without any risk to the eyes?

Yes, permanent eyeliner is very safe when performed by a certified specialist in a sterile environment. The needle works extremely shallowly, right along the lash line, and your eyes are kept closed throughout the procedure. It may tickle and feel a bit strange, but most people do not experience any severe pain.

How long does the treatment at the clinic take, and how long is the recovery period?

The procedure at the clinic takes around 2 to 2.5 hours, nearly half of which is spent on measurements and anaesthesia. The immediate recovery period (when the area weeps and scabs form) takes around 7–14 days for eyebrows and 3–5 days for lips. You won’t need to take time off work, but you will need to adjust your exercise and shower routines.
