What does a chin lift involve?

Chin surgery and chin liposuction are surgical procedures designed to define and balance the lower third of the face. During liposuction, microcannulas are used to permanently remove excess fat. Chin surgery may involve inserting a silicone implant to enhance a weak profile, or performing a bone-surgical adjustment to reduce an overly prominent chin. The methods differ radically, and during the consultation we will determine medically which procedure best suits your anatomical conditions.

Our techniques for chin surgery

We use tried-and-tested, safe surgical techniques to ensure the highest level of patient safety. Our specialists carefully assess which type of liposuction is the most medically appropriate option for your individual anatomy, in order to achieve a balanced and natural result.

Liposuction chin

Excess fatty tissue is permanently removed through incisions measuring just a few millimetres. A specific procedure known as chin and jawline liposuction (also referred to as chin and jawline liposuction) is often performed to tighten and define the lower facial contour.

Jaw implant

To enhance a weak chin, a custom-made implant is placed close to the bone.

Jawbone reduction

If the chin is very prominent, the surgeon can shave it down or reshape the bone structure to create a softer profile.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of which surgical technique is deemed best suited to your anatomy, our specialists use microsurgical instruments that minimise tissue trauma. A gentle and precise approach reduces bleeding and swelling after the procedure. This promotes a safer healing process and is key to ensuring extremely discreet scars.

The Evolution of You

Hook plastic
Step by step

To ensure you feel confident and well prepared, we have a clear and reliable process in place, from your first visit right through to your final follow-up appointment. Here, we provide an overview of how a chin surgery procedure works with us, from start to finish.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

We will assess the structure of your legs and the elasticity of your skin, and discuss whether liposuction, implants or leg surgery is the right option for you.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Once you have had time to consider it, the operation will be scheduled. It is an absolute medical requirement that you do not smoke at all for four weeks before and after the procedure.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

You will be admitted. Minor liposuction procedures can sometimes be carried out under local anaesthetic, whereas full chin surgery or the insertion of implants is usually performed under general anaesthetic.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will rest in our recovery room. You will be fitted with a compression bandage that applies even pressure to your chin and jawline. The vast majority of patients are able to go home the same day.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

The compression bandage should be worn as instructed by the surgeon to reduce swelling. Exercise that raises the heart rate must be avoided for at least one month.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

We will arrange regular check-ups with our nurses to remove any stitches. A final check-up with your surgeon will take place after six months.

Results following a throat operation

Healing in the face requires a little patience. During the first few weeks, it is normal for the area to be swollen and feel tight. The healing process following your chin liposuction begins immediately, but initially the skin may feel tight and slightly uneven beneath the surface before it softens. The skin gradually contracts to fit the new contour, but the final anatomical result can only be medically assessed after six to twelve months, once all underlying swelling has completely subsided.

Our specialists in facial surgery

At The Faculty, plastic surgery specialists with in-depth expertise in facial anatomy work. Sculpting the jawline or performing bone surgery on the chin places extreme demands on the surgeon’s understanding of the facial nerves and musculature. Our extensive clinical experience is your guarantee of a safe outcome.

Who is eligible for a chin lift?

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved, such as bleeding, infection or asymmetrical healing. With chin augmentation using implants, there is a small risk that the implant may shift before it has fully settled into place. Fear of a failed chin liposuction (where, for example, visible dimples or skin irregularities occur) is common, which is why choosing an experienced specialist surgeon and a gentle, even suction technique is absolutely crucial for your medical safety. In rare cases, small sensory nerves may be temporarily affected during the operation.

Complications and risks

Facial harmony is about the overall picture. Often, an imbalance in the profile is due to the relationship between the nose and the chin. That is why a combined nose and chin augmentation is a relatively common procedure, in which we simultaneously adjust the bridge of the nose and augment the chin. If the sagging appearance is primarily due to excess skin on the neck, rather than just localised fat, a facelift or neck lift may be a more anatomically appropriate option.

Why consider a chin lift?

The harmony between the nose, lips and chin in the face (chin-face) is key to the balance of the profile. Many patients choose to undergo chin surgery for personal reasons. This may be because they have a receding chin (the perception of having almost no chin when viewed in profile), wish to soften a very pointed chin, or correct a so-called ‘ditch chin’ (a distinct indentation in the chin). Others are bothered by localised fat deposits under the chin, often referred to as a double chin. Whatever your reasons, we listen carefully and devise a realistic, medically sound plan based on your individual circumstances.

Frequently asked questions about the chin

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers regarding tummy tucks

Should I go for surgery or fillers for my chin?

We receive many enquiries about using chin fillers to enhance the profile. An injection of 1 ml or more of chin filler can provide a temporary increase in volume and is often used along the jawline to create a quick but temporary contour. Our nurses offer chin fillers in Stockholm, but for patients seeking a permanent anatomical result, our surgeons recommend a chin implant. One should also take the risks of chin fillers into account, such as the fact that the gel material may migrate over time, which is completely avoided with a fixed surgical implant.

Is liposuction better than fat-dissolving injections (Belkyra)?

There are now non-surgical injection treatments available to reduce a double chin, such as Belkyra. However, the results of a Belkyra treatment can vary significantly from patient to patient, and it usually requires several sessions to see a clear difference in before-and-after photos. For the precise, predictable and permanent removal of fat cells, our specialists believe that traditional surgical liposuction using a microcannula is the superior method from a purely medical perspective.

Do you have any before-and-after photos of chin fillers on your website?

Yes, although this page focuses primarily on surgery, our injections department has extensive experience. During a consultation for injections, we can show you ‘before and after’ photos of chin fillers to illustrate the temporary difference compared to the permanent result of a chin augmentation.

What does a thread lift for the chin involve?

A thread lift is a non-surgical procedure in which absorbable threads with barbs lift the skin from within. The procedure provides temporary tightening but does not permanently remove skin or fat.
At The Faculty, we generally recommend surgical procedures (such as liposuction or a neck lift) to achieve a natural, anatomically correct and long-lasting result for the jaw and chin area.

Will there be visible scarring after chin surgery?

During liposuction, only tiny incisions, just a few millimetres in size, are made in natural creases under the chin or behind the ear; these heal to become virtually invisible dots. When performing chin augmentation using implants, the surgeon can often make the incision under the chin.

How do you fix a chin with a dimple (butt chin)?

Patients often ask how we can correct a chin if they have a congenital indentation, commonly known as a ‘dumb chin’. Depending on the depth, this can be medically corrected by the surgeon either transplanting the patient’s own fat (fat grafting) into the indentation, or by performing a minor surgical adjustment of the underlying musculature causing the indentation in the skin.

How is the procedure carried out (under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic)?

It depends entirely on the extent of the procedure. A limited liposuction under the chin can often be carried out under local anaesthetic in combination with painkillers and sedatives. However, if you are having orthognathic surgery on the chin, having an implant inserted, or combining chin surgery with rhinoplasty, the operation is always performed under general anaesthesia to ensure the highest possible patient safety and comfort.
