What is arm lift surgery?

An arm lift, or upper arm lift, is a contouring cosmetic surgical procedure designed to reduce sagging skin and excess tissue on the upper arms. Depending on your individual anatomy, the procedure can be performed as a classic lift where skin is removed, or combined with arm liposuction if there are also localised fat deposits. During your consultation, we will discuss the various options in detail to find the surgical method that best suits your body’s unique characteristics.

Our techniques for arm lift surgery

We use tried-and-tested, safe surgical techniques to meet your specific needs. During your consultation with your surgeon, we will assess whether arm lift surgery, arm liposuction or a combination of both is the most suitable option for your body type.

Arm lift (upper arm lift)

This procedure involves removing excess skin and any remaining fatty tissue from the inner or back of the upper arm. The method creates a firmer contour but results in a permanent scar.

Arm liposuction

For those of you who have good skin elasticity but are bothered by localised pockets of fat, liposuction of the upper arms may be sufficient. The procedure is performed via very small incisions and leaves minimal scarring.

Combined procedures

Liposuction is often combined with a skin tightening procedure to achieve the desired shape and definition along the entire upper arm.

The Evolution of You

arm plastic surgery
Step by step

To ensure you feel fully prepared, we have a clear and reliable process in place, from your first visit right through to your final follow-up appointment.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

You will meet with a plastic surgery specialist for a thorough clinical examination of your upper arms. Together, you will discuss your wishes and circumstances and assess whether arm liposuction, traditional arm lift surgery or a combined approach is the most suitable option for achieving a balanced result. You will be provided with full information regarding risks and costs.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Once your statutory cooling-off period has passed and you have given your consent, your operation will be scheduled. You will receive detailed instructions from our coordinator. It is absolutely essential that you refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol for at least four weeks prior to the procedure. The evening before and on the morning of the operation, you should shower thoroughly using an antibacterial soap.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

At the clinic, you will be looked after, get changed and meet your plastic surgeon and anaesthetist for final planning and photographs. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia for your safety and usually takes between one and two hours, depending on whether it involves skin removal alone or whether liposuction of the upper arms is performed at the same time.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will wake up in our specialist recovery ward, where we will monitor your initial recovery. It is perfectly normal to experience swelling, tightness and tenderness in your arms during the first 24 hours. You will be given tailored pain relief to manage this discomfort and will be discharged once our doctors assess that your condition is stable.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

The first few weeks at home require plenty of rest, and you must avoid heavy lifting and activities that raise your heart rate. You should wear a custom-made compression bandage around the clock to reduce swelling and support the tissue. Careful taping of your arm plastic surgery scars is crucial during the first few months to optimise the skin’s healing process.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

After about a week, you will see a nurse at our clinic for an initial wound check and, if necessary, to have your stitches removed. After around six months, you will be booked in for a final follow-up appointment with your specialist surgeon to assess the final anatomical result and take a final photograph of your surgical areas.

Results of arm reconstruction

The results of an upper arm lift become progressively clearer as the swelling subsides and the tissue softens; this takes between 3 and 6 months. When reviewing before-and-after photos of arm lift surgery, we can see how individual anatomical factors, such as the initial amount of excess skin and the distribution of fatty tissue, influence the final result. Factors such as the skin’s inherent elasticity and how closely the aftercare instructions are followed are crucial to how well the skin heals and how discreet the scars become over time. It is important to remember that surgery aims to improve the contour based on your unique circumstances and that the final healing process requires patience.

Risks associated with arm surgery

Every surgical procedure carries certain medical risks. General risks include temporary bleeding, infection or delayed wound healing. Specific to arm lift surgery are the risks of asymmetry and visible scarring along the inside of the upper arm. There may also be temporary or permanent loss of sensation in the operated area. During your consultation, the surgeon will go through all potential complications in detail, as well as how we at The Faculty work with strict medical protocols and preventive measures to minimise the risks.

What is arm lift surgery?

Arm lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure designed to remove excess skin and tighten the tissue on the upper arms. The procedure, also known as a brachioplasty, is tailored entirely to your anatomy. Depending on the amount of excess skin present, the method may vary; surgical removal of skin is often combined with liposuction of the arms to address localised fat deposits and achieve a proportionate contour. During a personal consultation, we will assess your situation and discuss which method is medically most suitable for you.

Frequently asked questions about arm lift surgery

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers regarding arm lift surgery

How much does arm lift surgery cost?

The cost of an arm lift is SEK 63,500, and a simple arm liposuction costs SEK 39,500. An individual and precise quote will always be provided during your consultation with the surgeon, based on your specific circumstances.

How visible will the scars from my arm lift be?

As the skin is removed surgically, a permanent scar will remain on the inside or back of the upper arm. Initially, it will be red and prominent, but with the right aftercare and careful taping, it will fade over time.

Can you have arm surgery through the county council?

It is very rare to have arm reconstruction surgery funded by the county council (the region), and this requires strict medical criteria to be met, such as significant functional difficulties or recurrent skin conditions following significant weight loss. The Faculty is a fully private clinic and does not accept referrals from the region.

What is the difference between arm lift surgery and arm liposuction?

Arm lift surgery primarily addresses excess skin (sagging skin) by surgically removing tissue. Liposuction of the upper arms only removes localised fat deposits and requires your skin to have sufficient elasticity to tighten up afterwards.

What is the recovery process like after an upper arm lift?

Most people can return to sedentary work after two to three weeks. You will need to wear a compression bandage around the clock at first and avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for at least four to six weeks.

What are the signs of complications following arm liposuction?

You should keep an eye out for any unusual symptoms, such as rapidly increasing swelling on one side, a persistent fever, severe redness or increasing pain that does not subside with pain relief. Always contact the clinic immediately if this occurs.

How long do I need to wear compression garments after arm lift surgery?

Following an upper arm lift, it is essential to wear a specially fitted compression garment (known as a bolero or sleeves) around the clock for the first 4–6 weeks. Compression is absolutely essential for reducing swelling, providing support to the newly tightened skin and relieving pressure on the arm lift scars so that they heal as well as possible. Your surgeon will give you specific instructions on how long you need to wear the garment, based on the extent of the procedure and your skin elasticity.
