Hi, just had a face, neck and nose surgery by Jonas R. Too early to say anything about the end result yet but he is magical in his practice so it can only be the best. I have never been treated so well and taken care of, all the way from the first consultation, surgery planning, reception, the surgery team, the two-night stay. First class VIP feeling right through including the environment which is also TopNotch, private room with TV "sea view" and large veranda/balcony. They have their own chef who prepares wonderful food based on wishes and possible allergens. Room service 24/7 Super professionals the whole team I must say. I will definitely come back here again. Kind regards, Anna

So professional, nice treatment from start to finish. Dr. Heden inspires great confidence and I received great information after the operation about how it went. The anesthesia and surgical staff were fantastic, I felt so calm and felt safe in their hands. The care in the nursing ward after the operation was top notch, nice, safe and good breakfast🌸

Modern business where everything is new and except for the staff, they are old in the paperclip, incredibly experienced and in sync from the reception, nurses, nurses, anesthesia staff and surgeons. No questions are stupid, and they have a rock-solid understanding of pain relief. When the breakfast tray arrives after waking up, you become a little religious with happiness.

Nice staff throughout the clinic and good aftercare, responds quickly to emails. Lovely Riikka operated on me after the effects of childbirth I had a few years earlier. It was nice to be operated on in an environment that is not depressing and with staff/surgeons who are committed.

What is bruxism?

In technical terms (and in Latin), teeth grinding is known as bruxism. In medical terms, the word refers to overactivity of the masticatory muscles, leading to unconsciously clenching the jaw (teeth clenching) or grinding the teeth against one another (grinding one’s teeth). The condition has its own medical diagnosis code (bruxism ICD-10 / teeth grinding ICD-10). The dominant muscle involved in this condition is the large chewing muscle, the masseter muscle. An effective treatment for bruxism involves injecting a muscle relaxant locally into this muscle. The muscle relaxant temporarily blocks nerve signals and provides immediate relaxation of your jaw muscles. This breaks the vicious cycle of overactivity without affecting your normal ability to chew or speak.

Our techniques for the jaw area

We use well-documented clinical techniques to treat hyperactivity in the lower third of the face, fully tailored to the anatomy of your jaw muscles.

Muscle relaxant injections

This is our primary treatment for teeth clenching and teeth grinding. We treat the masseter muscle with precise doses of the medication to reduce spasms and induce deep relaxation.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Our specialists have an in-depth understanding of the anatomy of your jawbone (the Latin term for the jawbone is ‘mandibula’). The injections are administered safely into the muscle belly, well away from the salivary glands and nerves.

A clinic full of expertise

We focus entirely on treating the muscles that cause the pain. The enormous pressure caused by untreated bruxism can, in the long term, damage both the teeth and the bone structure. For patients who already have a dental implant and poor jawbone health, it is particularly important to reduce this pressure, as the muscle force could otherwise compromise the implant’s stability. The Faculty carries out the muscle-relaxing part of the treatment. However, when it comes to purely dental procedures, such as fitting a mouthguard for bruxism, treating an infection in the jawbone, performing jawbone-implant surgery, or answering questions about what is involved in rebuilding the jawbone (cost and surgery), we refer patients to traditional dental care.

Pre-treatment consultation

A successful clinical outcome begins with a thorough consultation. Our specialists will palpate (feel) your jaw muscles whilst you clench your teeth to assess their size and strength. You will receive objective medical information about the risks, expected results and aftercare.

After the consultation, you have a statutory cooling-off period of at least 48 hours (which applies to aesthetic injection treatments) to allow you to decide in your own time whether you wish to give your consent.

The Evolution of You

Treatment for bruxism
Step by step

To ensure the highest standards of medical care, we follow a carefully designed clinical process when treating teeth grinding and bruxism

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

The therapist assesses the limits of the masseter muscle. You will be asked to clench your teeth tightly several times so that we can pinpoint exactly where the muscle is at its thickest and most overactive.

Preparations

Preparing for a safe operation

The skin over the corners of the mouth is thoroughly disinfected with chlorhexidine. We mark out strategic injection points, well within the boundaries of the muscle and at a safe distance from the facial nerves and cheekbones.

The treatment

Safe care at the clinic

Using a very fine microneedle, the medicine is injected deep into the abdominal muscles, usually at 3 to 4 points on each side. The procedure takes just a few minutes and usually feels like nothing more than a deep, brief pressure. No anaesthetic is required.

After treatment

Awakening and initial rest

The skin is examined. It is normal to experience slight tenderness or redness at the injection site for a few hours.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

Avoid massaging your jaws or the area around the injection sites. Do not wear make-up for the first 12 hours, and refrain from intense, heart-rate-raising exercise and sauna sessions for the first 48 hours to prevent the medicine from spreading to unwanted muscles.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

If necessary, we offer a follow-up appointment after 4 weeks to assess the relief of symptoms and the relaxation of the muscle.

Results following treatment

The clinical results of muscle-relaxing treatment for bruxism are very good and well-documented. Unlike the smaller facial muscles, the masseter is a very large and strong muscle. Consequently, it often takes 10 to 14 days before you notice a clear reduction in pain and relaxation in the jaw, although the final result is achieved after 4 weeks. The clinical durability varies depending on your individual muscle strength, but on average the effect lasts for 3 to 6 months. With regular treatments, the muscle usually loses its excessive strength over time, which can lead to more long-lasting results.

Our specialists in injections

At The Faculty, we prioritise medical expertise above all else. Your jaw pain treatment and injections for bruxism are carried out exclusively by registered doctors and registered injection nurses with extensive clinical experience. Injecting muscle relaxants into large muscle groups such as the masseter requires a precise understanding of tissue depth and muscle function.

Who can undergo the treatment?

To undergo medical injection treatments, you must be over 18 years of age, in good health and not be pregnant or breastfeeding. A relatively common problem is teeth grinding in children (and teeth grinding in children whilst they are asleep), but for medical and ethical reasons we do not carry out any teeth grinding treatment on children. If you are seeking help for a child’s teeth grinding, we will refer you directly to the child’s regular dentist for an assessment.

Complications and risks

Muscle-relaxing treatment for bruxism is generally a very safe method when carried out by certified healthcare professionals. The most common side effects are temporary tenderness or minor bruising at the jaw joint. If the injection is placed incorrectly, asymmetry in the smile may occur (if the medication spreads to a facial muscle), or the patient may find that it temporarily feels more difficult to chew very chewy food. Our expertise and in-depth anatomical knowledge of the jaw area strictly minimise all these risks.

Other treatments for profile balancing

In addition to neuromuscular treatments for the jaw, The Faculty offers a comprehensive range of aesthetic injection treatments and plastic surgery. Whether you are seeking help with facial contouring using fillers, skin rejuvenation or the treatment of expression lines in the upper half of the face, our qualified specialists and surgeons are on hand to provide an objective and medically sound comprehensive assessment.

Why consider muscle-relaxing treatment for tense jaw muscles?

Tense jaw muscles and untreated teeth grinding can lead to serious complications. Common symptoms of bruxism (and teeth grinding) include chronic facial pain, pain radiating to the ears (some people even experience bruxism-related tinnitus) and pronounced teeth-grinding headaches. The standard treatment in dentistry is often a custom-made mouth guard. Many patients are constantly on the lookout for the best mouth guard for teeth grinding (bruxism mouth guard) to protect their teeth at night. Whilst a mouthguard for teeth grinding does protect the enamel, it does not prevent the muscle from continuing to spasm. Many people therefore find that muscle-relaxing injections are an indispensable alternative to a mouthguard, or a perfect complement to actually treat the underlying cause.

Frequently asked questions about the treatment of bruxism

Here we have compiled some frequently asked questions about the treatment of bruxism

Are muscle relaxant injections a good alternative to a mouth guard for teeth grinding?

Yes, for many adult patients. Whilst the best mouthguard for teeth grinding does protect the tooth enamel from wear, it rarely stops the underlying muscle spasm. The medication, on the other hand, tackles the root of the problem and forces the masseter muscle to relax. A combination of both is often recommended for the most effective treatment of teeth clenching.

Can you exercise your jaw muscles to get rid of the pain?

In physiotherapy, specific movement exercises for the temporomandibular joints and jaw muscles (often referred to as bruxism exercises) are sometimes used. Relaxing the jaw muscles through, for example, massage or acupuncture can temporarily relieve stress-related tension. However, in cases of severe bruxism, where the muscle has become significantly enlarged, exercising the jaw muscles alone is rarely sufficient to break the involuntary spasm; medical intervention is then required.

Does the treatment result in more defined jawbones?

A common aesthetic concern is how to make the jawline appear more defined. When the masseter muscle is overactive, it increases in volume, which often results in a wider and more square-shaped lower face. When the muscle is allowed to rest through muscle-relaxing injections, it reduces in size. This indirectly highlights your natural bone structure and can result in more defined jawbones and a slimmer V-shape.

Does the treatment help with tension headaches and jaw pain?

Yes, absolutely. Many patients who suffer from chronic teeth-grinding-related headaches and facial pain notice a marked and often life-changing improvement. When the constant pressure exerted by the chewing muscles on the skull and temples finally eases, the most severe symptoms often disappear, making the injections a highly effective treatment for jaw pain.

Can the treatment be carried out if I have a dental implant or poor jawbone quality?

The injections are administered superficially into the masseter muscle and do not affect the underlying bone structure. If you have a dental implant and poor jawbone quality, it is actually often beneficial to reduce the pressure exerted by the muscle to avoid unnecessary wear and tear on your jawbone implant. However, if you have an active infection in your jawbone, we will not carry out any injections until it has healed. For questions regarding jawbone augmentation (cost and surgery), we always refer you to your regular dentist.

Do you treat teeth grinding in children?

No. Teeth grinding in children is relatively common, particularly whilst they are growing and losing their baby teeth. However, for strictly medical and ethical reasons, The Faculty does not treat bruxism with muscle relaxants in people under the age of 18. If you are concerned about a child’s teeth grinding, we refer you to the regular paediatric and adolescent dental care service for an assessment.

What is the difference between bruxism and teeth grinding?

There is no difference. Bruxism is the technical term for teeth grinding (it is the official medical term). Whether you search online for foreign technical terms such as ‘what is bruxism’ and ‘how to stop bruxism’, or use the Swedish expressions for ‘teeth clenching’ and ‘teeth grinding’, it refers to exactly the same clinical overactivity in the jaw muscles that we treat.
