SFEP presents an honorary award to our founder Per Hedén. The pioneer who put Sweden on the global plastic surgery map

With a tireless commitment to science, education and craftsmanship, Per Hedén has been one of the absolute driving forces behind the development of aesthetic plastic surgery. Now he is awarded the SFEP's honorary award for his pioneering contributions - from introducing microsurgery in Sweden to creating the world's premier meeting place for the profession.

The motivation for the honorary award:
"Per has meant an incredible amount to the development of aesthetic plastic surgery. He is not only a fantastic teacher, he has also brought microsurgery to Sweden and, thanks to BtS, put Sweden on the map for aesthetic plastic surgery. Thank you Per!"

The pioneer who brought microsurgery to Sweden

Per Hedén's journey in plastic surgery is characterized by a constant pursuit of precision, method development and scientific foundation. His early efforts in introducing and establishing microsurgery in Sweden laid the foundation for a completely new standard in both reconstructive and aesthetic surgery.

In addition to his own surgical successes, he has acted as a mentor and teacher to generations of plastic surgeons over the years. Through his passion for teaching, he has generously shared his knowledge and shaped the high quality that characterizes Swedish plastic surgery today.

Beauty Through Science: Sweden on the world map

When the Swedish Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (SFEP) was formed in 1983, aesthetic surgery was initially met with skepticism from parts of traditional medical education. However, development progressed rapidly, and the need for uniform standards, education and international exchange became increasingly clear.

In 2002, Per Hedén took an initiative that would completely change the playing field: the founding of Beauty Through Science (BTS) in Stockholm.

What began as a vision to bring together the world's leading surgeons for scientific exchange has grown into one of the world's most prestigious and influential international meetings. Through BTS, Per has not only created a forum for excellence, but also positioned Sweden as a global knowledge center in aesthetic plastic surgery.

A driving force for SFEP, quality and patient safety

Per Hedén's work reflects the entire development journey that SFEP has made – from a challenging start in the 1980s to today's internationally respected quality organization.

Over the years, members of SFEP have driven crucial initiatives for the industry, including the creation of the Swedish Breast Implant Registry (BRIMP) 2014, the handling of global crises such as the PIP scandal, and the work for increased patient safety and strict ethical guidelines (Guidelines).

The fact that Per Hedén is now being awarded the honorary prize is a tribute to a person who has not only built his own successful career, but who has lifted an entire profession with his leadership and pedagogical drive.
