What does eyelid surgery involve?

Eyelid surgery (medically known as blepharoplasty) is a cosmetic and functional surgical procedure. If you choose to have surgery on heavy eyelids, this often involves surgically removing excess skin and sometimes underlying fatty tissue to restore a more open eye profile. The decision to undergo eyelid surgery may involve either the upper or lower part of the eye, or both at the same time. During a consultation, a thorough clinical analysis of your anatomy is carried out to determine exactly which tissue is causing the heaviness, and thus which method is most suitable.

Our methods for eyelid surgery

To achieve a natural and long-lasting result, our surgeons always take your individual tissue structures into account. We use different techniques depending on whether you are having upper eyelid surgery or lower eyelid surgery.

Upper eyelid surgery

During upper eyelid surgery, a precise incision is made in the eyelid’s natural crease. Excess skin, and in some cases a small amount of fat, is removed to open up the eye anatomically.

Lower eyelid surgery

To treat bags under the eyes, a discreet incision is made just below the lower lash line, or on the inside of the eyelid. Fat deposits are reduced or redistributed, and any excess skin is tightened.

Gentle technology and medical precision

Regardless of which surgical method is deemed best suited to your anatomy, our specialists use refined techniques that minimise surgical trauma to the extremely delicate skin around the eyes. Sometimes we also incorporate laser eyelid surgery (or combine eyelid surgery with laser treatment) to further tighten the skin. A gentle and precise approach is crucial for reducing bleeding and swelling. This promotes safer healing after eyelid surgery and ensures discreet scarring.

Consultation for eyelid surgery

The first step is a consultation with a plastic surgery specialist. You choose whether you want to book an online appointment or meet us in person at the clinic. During the appointment, you will be given medical information about risks, current waiting times and which techniques are best for you.

You will be given a specific treatment proposal tailored to your body. After the consultation, you will have at least seven days to consider the matter and decide, at your leisure, whether you wish to give your consent.

The Evolution of You

Eyelid surgery
Step by step

For your peace of mind, we have designed a secure process, from your initial enquiry right through to your final check-up. Here is an overview of how the procedure works.

Consultation

Medical assessment and choice of method

<p style="font-size: clamp(16px, 1.2vw, 17px)The surgeon will examine your eyelids, measure the excess skin and determine the surgical technique. We will discuss the risks and aftercare associated with eyelid surgery.

Before your procedure

Preparing for a safe operation

Once you have given your consent, your operation will be booked. It is essential that you do not smoke at all for four weeks before and after the operation to ensure optimal wound healing.

The day of the operation

Safe care at the clinic

<p style="font-size: clamp(16px, 1.2vw, 17px)"You will be admitted and meet your surgeon. Depending on the method used, the procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic with sedation, or under general anaesthetic, and usually takes around one to two hours.

After the operation

Awakening and initial rest

You will rest in the recovery room. A cold compress will be placed over your eyes to reduce swelling. Most patients go home the same day with a prescribed painkiller.

Recovery & healing

Self-care and convalescence guidelines

Keep track of your eyelid surgery day by day. Sleep with your head elevated. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for the first few weeks.

Monitoring & results

Medical check-up and final assessment

A follow-up appointment to remove the stitches after eyelid surgery is usually scheduled for around 6–7 days later. A final check-up is booked for six months later.

Results following eyelid surgery

The results following the removal of excess skin around the eyes depend on your original anatomy. Immediately after eyelid surgery, it is perfectly normal for the skin to be swollen, feel tight and for bruising to appear around the eyes. Initially, the skin may feel tight, but the tissue gradually relaxes and settles into its final position. We monitor your healing process closely, and the final anatomical result is usually assessed after six months, once all swelling following the eyelid surgery has completely subsided and the scars have begun to fade.

Who can perform eyelid surgery?

To book a cosmetic procedure with us, you must be at least 18 years old and in good general health. During the consultation, a thorough assessment is carried out to ensure that the procedure is suitable. Some patients ask whether it is possible to have free eyelid surgery (can you get eyelid surgery for free through the NHS?). To have eyelid surgery funded by the NHS (or surgery for drooping eyelids funded by the NHS), you must have a documented, significant restriction of your field of vision that medically affects your daily life. At a private clinic such as The Faculty, the patient pays for the procedure themselves in order to restore their previous appearance.

Possible complications and risks

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved. General complications include bleeding, infection or asymmetry in the healing process. Specific risks associated with this particular procedure include temporary dry eyes, difficulty closing the eye completely during the initial healing phase, or thickening of the scar tissue following eyelid surgery. Many people worry about a ‘botched eyelid operation’ (where too much skin is removed), which is why choosing an experienced specialist surgeon and a gentle technique is absolutely crucial for your medical safety.

Other facial surgery treatments

Often, it is not just the skin of the eyelids that causes a drooping appearance, but the fact that the eyebrow or forehead itself has sagged. For this reason, upper eyelid surgery is often performed in combination with an endoscopic forehead lift or eyebrow lift to restore the anatomy of the entire upper face. During a consultation, we will carefully examine which facial structure is causing your concerns.

Why have eyelid surgery?

The reasons for seeking cosmetic surgery for the eye area vary from person to person. Over time, the thin skin around the eyes loses its elasticity, which can cause the skin to crease and rest on the eyelashes. Many people choose to have surgery on drooping upper eyelids to reduce a feeling of heaviness or irritation, whilst others opt for lower eyelid surgery to address prominent fat pads (bags). The motivation is highly personal, and we listen to your reasons to design a treatment plan that is entirely based on your anatomical conditions, without promising specific emotional outcomes.

Frequently asked questions about eyelid surgery

Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers regarding boiler lifts

What does the swelling look like, and how is the healing progressing (one week after eyelid surgery)?

Swelling and bruising are completely normal. When looking at the day-to-day recovery from eyelid surgery, the swelling is usually most pronounced during the first 48 hours. After about a week, just as the stitches are being removed, the worst of the swelling and the most intense bruising will have started to subside significantly. However, complete healing of the tissue and internal healing following eyelid surgery takes several months.

What should you bear in mind regarding aftercare following eyelid surgery?

Proper aftercare following eyelid surgery (things to bear in mind after eyelid surgery) is crucial. You should sleep with your head elevated and avoid bending forward during the first few days. Sometimes the surgeon prescribes a soothing ointment after eyelid surgery to protect the eye or moisturise the scars. When it comes to make-up after eyelid surgery, you must wait until the stitches have been removed and the wounds have fully healed (usually around 10–14 days) to avoid infections in the incisions.

When should the stitches be removed after eyelid surgery?

Stitches following eyelid surgery are usually removed during a scheduled follow-up appointment with our nurses at the clinic, approximately six to seven days after the procedure. The removal is quick and rarely painful, and afterwards the tightness in the eyelids usually eases considerably.

Can drooping eyelids be treated with a laser rather than surgery?

Patients sometimes ask about laser eyelid surgery (or laser treatment for drooping eyelids). Certain types of laser or plasma pens can slightly tighten the skin superficially, but if there is a genuine excess of skin or heavy fat deposits, traditional surgery is required to achieve a satisfactory and medically sound anatomical result. The laser is therefore not a direct substitute for surgical removal of excess eyelid skin with a scalpel in cases of more pronounced problems.

How long do the results of eyelid surgery last?

Eye surgery produces very long-lasting, and sometimes permanent, results. Admittedly, the procedure does not halt your body’s natural ageing process, which means that the skin’s elasticity will continue to change over the decades. However, anatomically speaking, skin and fat are permanently removed, meaning that you will always have a more open eye profile than if you had never had the operation.

Will the county council cover the cost of my operation (eyelid surgery)?

There is a clear set of guidelines governing eyelid surgery within the county council. The National Health Service only covers the cost of surgery when the skin hangs so heavily over the eye that it causes a medically proven and significant restriction of the field of vision (often measured by an optician or ophthalmologist). Cosmetic corrections, carried out because the patient feels their eyes look heavy or tired, are not covered by the county council but must be paid for privately at a private clinic.

How can I avoid a botched eyelid operation?

To minimise risks and avoid asymmetry, an inability to close the eye (dry eyes) or overly visible scars following eyelid surgery, the choice of surgeon is of the utmost importance. Always choose a qualified specialist in plastic surgery with proven experience specifically in eyelid surgery. Another critical factor is that you, as a patient, follow the restrictions regarding stopping smoking and aftercare to the letter to ensure an optimal and safe healing process.
