Byte av bröstimplantat i Stockholm
Are you thinking about having your implants replaced? The body changes over time, and sometimes even previous breast surgery needs to be updated. At The Faculty in Stockholm, we offer highly specialised revision surgery. Our plastic surgeons will guide you with medical transparency and reassurance, whether you wish to adjust the size, correct capsular contracture or have your breast implants removed entirely.
What does an implant replacement involve?
Our procedures for implant replacement
Revision surgery places extremely high demands on a plastic surgeon’s knowledge of anatomy. The choice of technique for breast implant replacement is carefully tailored to your individual circumstances and the current elasticity of your skin. We offer four main techniques.
Size adjustment (larger or smaller)
If you are happy with the shape but would like to change the implant to a different size, we usually use your existing scar. The plastic surgeon opens the old pocket, removes the old implants and adjusts the space – either by widening it to accommodate a larger implant, or by tightening the tissue with internal sutures to ensure a smaller implant sits securely.
Implant replacement with a breast lift
If your skin has lost its elasticity since your first operation, simply replacing the implant is rarely enough. To restore a firm structure, we combine the implant replacement with a surgical lift, during which we remove excess skin and reposition the nipple to a balanced position.
Implant replacement with capsulotomy
Implant removal (Removal of breast implants)
For patients who, for medical or personal reasons, wish to have their breast implants completely removed, we perform a gentle removal (explantation). Depending on the amount of tissue present, this procedure may sometimes need to be combined with a breast lift to ensure the breasts retain a good shape once the volume is reduced.
Gentle technology and medical precision
Regardless of the size or shape chosen, we use modern instruments that minimise surgical trauma to the delicate breast tissue. This is essential for reducing bleeding and swelling after the operation, which in turn promotes a smoother healing process and lowers the risk of capsular contracture (hard scar tissue).
A clinic full of expertise
Undergoing plastic surgery is a major decision that requires a deep sense of trust. At The Faculty, you will meet a hand-picked team of plastic surgery specialists with many years of in-depth experience in breast surgery and anatomical contouring. All our plastic surgeons are also members of the Swedish Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the Swedish Society of Plastic Surgeons. Our primary goal is always to offer you objective facts, surgical precision and patient safety of the very highest standard, from your very first consultation to your final follow-up appointment.
Price and cost of implant replacement
The cost of replacing implants depends entirely on the complexity of the procedure. The total cost of breast implant revision surgery depends on whether capsular contracture removal or a surgical lift is required, or whether we are simply replacing the implants.

Removal of implants (anaesthesia)
fr. 37 000 krRemoval of breast implants under general anaesthesia, with or without a lift in the same operation. How the breasts will look afterwards depends on how long the implants have been in place and on the quality of the skin, and we go through this at the consultation.
Pre-procedure consultation
The first step is a consultation with a plastic surgery specialist. You choose whether you want to book an online appointment or meet us in person at the clinic. During the appointment, you will be given medical information about risks, current waiting times and which techniques are best for you.
You will receive a personalised treatment plan tailored to your body. Please meet with the coordinator; if an online consultation is required, the client must visit the clinic for measurements and to decide on the implants.
Before and after implant replacement
Understanding how scar tissue and skin react during revision surgery is important for setting safe and realistic expectations. The healing process in tissue that has already undergone surgery is entirely unique. During your consultation, we therefore always show relevant medical examples and before-and-after images, focusing specifically on implant replacements and removals.
Implant replacement
Your implant replacement
Step by step
To ensure that your treatment experience is as safe as possible, we have a quality-assured process from consultation through to a fully healed result.
01. Consultation
Medical assessment and choice of method
You will meet with your plastic surgeon for a thorough assessment of your current figure and your individual circumstances, and they will listen to your wishes.
02. Before your procedure
Preparing for a safe operation
Our coordinator will provide you with important information. Among other things, you will need to stop smoking and drinking alcohol for four weeks beforehand. You should also wash with chlorhexidine soap before you arrive.
03. The day of the operation
Safe care at the clinic
The procedure is performed by your plastic surgeon under general anaesthetic in our state-of-the-art operating theatres. The operation usually takes between one and two hours, depending on its complexity.
04. After the operation
Awakening and initial rest
You will be monitored in our recovery ward. Your chest will feel sore and tight. Pain relief will be tailored to your needs before you go home or stay overnight.
05. Recovery & healing
Self-care and convalescence guidelines
Recovery following implant removal is generally quicker and involves less pain than when implants are inserted behind the muscle for the first time. If we insert new implants, you must wear a sports bra around the clock, and you must strictly avoid exercise that raises your heart rate and heavy lifting for the first four to six weeks.
06. Monitoring & results
Medical check-up and final assessment
Around seven to fourteen days after the procedure, you will see a nurse who will check your scars and the healing process. A final follow-up appointment with your surgeon will be scheduled six months after the operation.
Outcomes of revision surgery
The outcome following an implant replacement is influenced by how the skin was shaped during your initial operation. Your breasts may be swollen and feel tight at first, although this phase often passes more quickly than after a first-time operation. We will monitor your healing process closely and assess the final anatomical result with you after approximately six to twelve months, once the tissue has fully softened and stabilised.
Our specialists in plastic surgery
At The Faculty, we have assembled a hand-picked team of plastic surgeons, with every cosmetic procedure being performed by a specialist surgeon with extensive expertise – the cornerstone of your safety.
Who is eligible for revision surgery?
To ensure safe anaesthesia and optimal healing, you must be over 18 years of age and in good general health. During the consultation, we will methodically review your medical history, including how your initial healing process went. Active smoking is a major medical contraindication for all breast surgery, but particularly for revision surgery where blood circulation in the tissue is already compromised.
Breast implant complications and risks associated with revision surgery
All surgical procedures carry medical risks. Bleeding, delayed wound healing or temporary changes in sensation may occur. The implant-specific complications we monitor closely include capsular contracture (when scar tissue hardens) and rippling (visible folds in the skin). We also maintain an open, fact-based dialogue regarding the medical discussions surrounding breast implant-associated illness (BII) and the risk of breast implant-associated cancer. It is important to note that BIA-ALCL is a form of lymphoma that occurs only in very rare cases and has been linked almost exclusively to specific macrotextured implants, a type of implant that we naturally avoid entirely for patient safety reasons.
Other treatments in breast surgery
Breast implants are not the only solution. During your consultation, we will assess your overall situation to find the procedure that best suits your needs. If you would like to increase your breast size without using foreign materials, we offer breast augmentation using your own body fat. If the issue is more about sagging skin, asymmetry or a heavy bust, we would instead recommend a breast lift or a breast reduction. Our expertise covers the entire field of breast surgery – including the removal of older implants (explantation) – which guarantees a bespoke and medically safe treatment plan tailored specifically to your body.

Why replace an implant?
Today’s modern breast implants are of a very high quality, but they are rarely a lifelong solution. Many women choose to book an appointment with us because they want a new shape following pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss. Others feel that the size they chose ten years ago no longer suits their lifestyle, and therefore wish to switch to smaller implants. There may also be medical reasons, such as the body having formed a hard scar capsule (capsular contracture), which makes replacing the implants necessary to restore a soft feel. Some patients also come to us requesting to have their breast implants permanently removed without having new ones inserted.
Frequently asked questions about implant replacement
Here we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers regarding implant replacement
How long do breast implants last, and do they need to be replaced?
Modern breast implants do not need to be replaced after a specific number of years (such as 10 years), as long as they are intact and your breasts feel soft. You should only consider replacing your implants if your body has changed and you want a new shape, or if a complication such as capsular contracture has occurred.
How does recovery after an implant removal compare to the first time?
Recovery following implant removal (explantation), or in the case of a replacement where we do not disturb the muscle as much, is often perceived as less severe and quicker. You rarely experience the same extreme tightness in the chest as you did during the initial operation.
What is the typical cost of breast implant revision surgery?
Replacing implants is often slightly more expensive than having them fitted for the first time, as the surgical technique is more advanced (the surgeon has to work within existing scar tissue and sometimes remove capsules). The price for a replacement usually starts at [Price].
Do the scars get worse when you have an implant replaced?
No, not usually. In the vast majority of cases, the surgeon will use exactly the same incision in the breast crease as in your first operation. We carefully remove the old scar and close the incision with fine sutures to ensure that the new scar is as inconspicuous as possible.
Is it possible to simply remove breast implants without having new ones inserted?
Yes, it is perfectly possible to simply have breast implants removed. However, it is important to be aware that the skin may have stretched, which means that your bust may initially feel a bit empty. For some people, the skin adapts, whilst others choose to combine the removal with a breast lift.
What happens to the scar capsule when breast implants are replaced?
It depends on the condition of the capsule. If your current capsule is soft and healthy, it can often be left in place to provide support. If the capsule is hard, thickened or calcified, the surgeon will remove it (capsulotomy) to give the new implant the best possible conditions.
Gör det onyy att byta bröstimplantat?
Most patients report that having their implants replaced is actually less painful than the initial operation, particularly if the new implants are placed in the pocket of tissue that has already been formed. The initial "pressure" across the chest is usually much less intense.
